Lisa Mann, Bre Gregg, and Mary Kadderly

Lisa Mann, Bre Gregg, and Mary KadderlyLisa Mann, Bre Gregg, and Mary Kadderly join forces to bring you a show at The Lake Theater & Café on Monday, April 10 complete with soulful performances, three-part harmonies, and powerful interpretations. Since these three women emerge from different musical backgrounds, their show will cover the blues, soul, jazz, and pop, and is packed with original music…some of it brand new. All three performers are on-stage throughout the show, creating a band with three lead singers, three songwriters, and three times the energy and joy to share with audiences.

With two Blues Music Awards, eight Cascade Blues Association Muddy Awards and a Blues Blast Award, Lisa Mann has been a major force on the national blues scene for a number of years. Mann’s voice effortlessly straddles the line between the honey sweet warmth of the South, and the force-of-nature sound Mann has cultivated by mastering everything from rock to Memphis soul.

Bre Gregg has one foot in the blues and the other in swampy soul. Although her red hair and freckles remind you of a sweet Irish lass, if you close your eyes and change your expectations, you will hear strong influences from Bonnie Raitt, Susan Tedeschi, and maybe even a dash of Patsy Cline.

With a range of musical styles that reaches from jazz and blues to R&B, country western and pop, long-time Portland favorite Mary Kadderly is a singer and songwriter with a truly distinctive voice that’s soothing, authentic, and compelling.

Joining Lisa Mann, Bre Gregg, and Mary Kadderly will be one of Portland’s finest guitar players, Dan Gildea, fresh off a European tour performing with blues vocalist Earl Thomas Bridgeman Jr.

The Lake Theater & Café is located at 106 N. State St. in Lake Oswego. Tickets for The Trifecta can be purchased at the venue’s website Laketheatercafe.com for $15.00.

Jimmy Makarounis at Jimmy Mak's

Musical Inspiration: Honoring Jimmy Mak will take place on Sunday, April 23 at The Roseland Theater. This tribute concert honors Jimmy Makarounis, the late owner of Portland’s premier jazz club Jimmy Mak’s. The three set program will feature noted musicians who performed at the club during its twenty year run.

“Jimmy Makarounis created much more than a jazz club,” explained event producer Tony Starlight. “Jimmy Mak’s was a cultural institution that put Portland on the map as a true music city.”Jimmy Makarounis at Jimmy Mak's

The April 23 event, which will be part of the 2017 Soul’d Out Festival, will feature one set each by iconic Portland jazz drummer Mel Brown’s hard-bop septet and his award-winning Hammond B-3 organ quintet, which will back well-known instrumentalists and vocalists who have played at the club over the past two decades, including Bobby Torres, Dan Balmer, LaRhonda Steele, and Andy Stokes. A third set backed by The Yachtsmen will feature funk, R&B and rock performances by saxophonist Patrick Lamb, vocalists Jarrod Lawson, Paul Creighton, and Moose E. Lee, and the Soul Vaccination Horns. Various jazz dignitaries will speak throughout the evening, and an after-party featuring the Chris Brown Quartet will take place in the Roseland’s ground-floor club, Peter’s Room, right after the concert concludes.

A percentage of the event’s proceeds will be used to fund a jazz scholarship at Portland State University in Makarounis’ name. “Jimmy Mak’s was one of the only clubs in Portland music history to open its doors to minors for early shows,” Starlight said. “This provided an opportunity for middle-school and high-school kids to be exposed to world-class players and educators like Mel Brown, Alan Jones, Dan Balmer, and Gordon Lee, providing an educational experience like no school in town.”

The Roseland Theater is located at 8 NW 6th Avenue. Tickets for this extraordinary event are available at etix.com for $25.00 general admission on the floor, $35.00 for balcony seating and $65.00 per person for VIP table seating on the main floor (each table seats 8 people) This is a 21 and over event. Black Joe Lewis and the Honey Bears

Anatomy texts might not show it, but the greatest soul and blues music leaves no doubt that the hip bone is directly connected to the heart. A fact that’s driven home in every note laid down by Austin’s Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears with their kind of gritty attitude and deliciously greasy groove–consciousness that’d pass muster in the toughest juke joint.Black Joe Lewis and the Honey Bears

With a voice that’s one part Joe Tex and one part Tyrone Davis, Lewis is a songwriter who creates his music naturally and cites James Brown and Lightnin’ Hopkins as two of his greatest influences. The Honeybears is one of those outfits that can communicate without speaking and their flow is showcased by their performances on stage. “Lewis has an amazing ability to just draw people in,” states Honeybears guitarist Zach Ernst. “For a lot of people, the blues is a museum piece, but Joe brings it into the moment.”

Touring in support of their recently released disc, Backlash, Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears will perform at Mississippi Studios, 3939 N Mississippi Avenue, on Sunday, April 9 at 9:00 pm. Tickets are $16.00 advance through Ticketfly.com or $18.00 day of show at the door. Opening the show will be Vampire Weekend drummer Chris Tomson’s solo project Dams of the West.

Guy Davis

Guy DavisGuy Davis’ parallel careers – as a musician, an author, a music teacher and a film, television and Broadway actor—mark him as a Renaissance man, yet the blues remain his first and greatest love.

Growing up in a family of artists (his parents were Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis), he fell under the spell of Blind Willie McTell and Fats Waller at an early age. Guy’s one-man play, The Adventures of Fishy Waters: In Bed with the Blues, premiered Off-Broadway in the ‘90s and has since been released as a double CD. He went on to star Off-Broadway as the legendary Robert Johnson in Robert Johnson: Trick the Devil, winning the Blues Foundation’s “Keeping the Blues Alive” award. He followed the footsteps of another blues legend when he joined the Broadway production of Finian’s Rainbow, playing the part originally done in 1947 by Sonny Terry. Along the way he cut nine acclaimed albums for the Red House label and three for his own label, Smokeydoke Records; and was nominated for nearly a dozen Blues Awards.

Davis has earned acclaim for his deft acoustic playing, his well-‐traveled voice and his literate, yet highly accessible songwriting. He’s taken his music to television (the Conan O’Brien and David Letterman shows) and radio (A Prairie Home Companion, Mountain Stage, World Cafe, E-Town), as well as performing at theaters and festivals. And he’s played the four corners of the world, with a recent tour taking him from the Equator to the Arctic Circle.

Mary Flower, Artistic Director and Instructor

Mary Flower’s immense fingerpicking guitar and lap-slide prowess is soulful and meter-perfect, a deft blend of the inventive, the dexterous and the mesmerizing. Her warm-as-honey-and-whiskey voice comforts like a winter quilt and soothes like a summer breeze.

An internationally known and award-winning picker, singer/songwriter and teacher, the Midwest native relocated to Portland in 2004. She continues to please crowds and critics at folk festivals and concert stages domestically and abroad, including Merlefest, Kerrville, King Biscuit, Prairie Home Companion and the Calgary Folk Festival, among many.

A finalist in 2000 and 2002 at the National Fingerpicking Guitar Championship (top 3 both years, and the only woman), a nominee in 2008 and 2012 for a Blues Foundation Blues Music Award, and a 2011 and 2014 Portland Muddy Award winner, Flower embodies a luscious and lusty mix of rootsy, acoustic-blues guitar and vocal styles that span a number of idioms – from Piedmont to the Mississippi Delta, with stops in ragtime, swing, folk and hot jazz.

Flower’s 10 recordings, including her last four for Memphis’ famed Yellow Dog Records – Bywater Dance, Instrumental Breakdown, Bridges and Misery Loves Company – show a deep command of and love for folk and blues string music. For Flower, it’s never about re-creation. Her dedication to the art form is a vital contribution to America’s music.

Orville Johnson

2017 Blues in the Gorge - Orville JohnsonOrville Johnson was born and raised in the southern Illinois heartland. He acquired his love of singing as a youth in the fundamentalist Pentecostal church he attended and, when he later began playing guitar and dobro, responded to the roots music that surrounded him by learning to play the blues, bluegrass, rockabilly, and country music that are all part of the mosaic that characterizes his own mongrel music.

He is a singer, instrumentalist, record producer, songwriter, session player, teacher, the top dobro player on the West Coast and, above all, an instinctive and sensitive musician. As his entry in the Encyclopedia of Northwest Music (Sasquatch Press 1999) states, he has become a vital figure on the NW music scene in the thirty-some years he’s lived there, appearing on over 400 CDs, movie and video soundtracks, commercials, producing 22 CDs for other artists, hosting a roots music radio show, and appearing in the 1997 film “Georgia” with Jennifer Jason-Leigh and Mare Winningham, on the Prairie Home Companion radio show and on Jay Leno’s Tonight Show.

Orville is also known as a patient and insightful teacher of music and has taught often at the Puget Sound Guitar Workshop as well as the International Guitar Seminar, Pt. Townsend Blues Workshop, Euro-Blues Workshop, B.C. Bluegrass Workshop and others. He has several teaching videos and DVDs and CDs of his own music available.

Valerie Turner

2017 Blues in the Gorge - Valerie TurnerValerie Turner is a native New Yorker with roots in Virginia and Georgia. She plays finger style Country Blues guitar which is a broad genre that includes blues, fiddle tunes, ballads, country and popular songs, ragtime, and gospel. She also dabbles with washboard, spoons, and banjo. Valerie’s first Country Blues guitar lessons were with Jack Baker in Greenwich Village and her eclectic repertoire was later influenced by her studies with both John Cephas and Woody Mann. She is an exceptional finger picker and her guitar playing is reminiscent of traditional blues greats like Mississippi John Hurt, Etta Baker and Elizabeth Cotton.

Turner and her husband perform together under the name “Piedmont Bluz.” They are dedicated to the preservation of Country Blues and the Piedmont style and their mission is to help keep this rural, east coast tradition alive by educating audiences about this unique aspect of African American culture through musical entertainment. They have been entertaining audiences at venues from Washington State to Jerusalem and are much loved wherever they go. The duo feel that “there are stories to tell, people to remember, and things that must be said” so they weave a bit of history into the presentation of each song.

In the cold winter months, live music lovers usually have to wait for the summer festival season to kick up their heels and dance to local and nationally acclaimed acts. LeeAnn Gibbons had an idea, with humble beginnings over a conversation at the kitchen table, to counteract the dreary days of winter with music, while at the same time benefitting charity.

Now in its sixth year, the Winter Blues Festival offers some of the best local and national acts, highlighting some of the biggest stars of the West Coast from California to Washington.

  • Lloyd Jones, Portland’s award-winning total package when it comes to the blues and roots music. A much sought after entertainer throughout the United States, he is also known as one of the founding members of the blues in the area as it is known today.
  • Cee Cee James, based in Washington, is as raw and real as it gets. Capable of bringing an audience to its knees with her performances, she is a gifted songwriter and she’ll bring THE MISSION OF S.O.U.L. to the Winter Blues Festival stage.
  • Rae Gordon & The Backseat Drivers, fresh back from competing in the International Blues Challenge and capturing 3rd place overall in an event that saw more than 260 acts from around the world. Rae is a Cascade Blues Association Muddy Hall of Fame inductee, winning the “Duffy Bishop” Female Vocalist award the past three years.
  • Guitarist and singer/songwriter CD Woodbury is an 8-time winner of Washington Blues Society awards and has had his recordings continue to rise on charts.
  • Long-time local favorite and nationally acclaimed musicians, Bill Rhoades & The Party Kings/Queens will finish the night with a special All-Star jam. Harmonica player Bill Rhoades is known as the “Godfather” of the Northwest Blues” and has long been credited with being one of the reasons the Northwest scene is well known for good blues throughout the world.
  • California-based band Jim Gustin and Truth Jones is a high energy soulful, blues act that has been turning heads wherever they go. The mix of the smoky raspy vocals from Big Jim Gustin paired with the strong and lovely voice of Jeri Goldenhar are a sweet and delicious combination.

The Winter Blues Festival has helped many charities throughout the years including C.H.A.P. (Children’s Healing Arts Project), the Oregon Food Bank and United By Music North America. This year’s charity beneficiary is the Youth Music Project, an organization based in West Linn, but providing services throughout the Portland Metro area. The Festival will also be accepting donations for the Oregon Food Bank and request six cans of food or purchase an emergency food box for $10.00 at the door to help feed the hungry in our region.

The Winter Blues Festival is held at the Milwaukie Elks Lodge & Ballroom, 13121 SE McLoughlin Blvd, on Saturday, March 11. Doors open at 2:30 pm, with music beginning at 3:00 pm. The venue offers large dance floors, a full service bar and food menu, on-site parking and is across the street from the MAX Orange line and bus stops.  There will also be a raffle and silent auction.

Birds of Chicago- photo Natalie Ginele Miller

Birds of Chicago, is a collective based around JT Nero and Allison Russell. Whether touring as a duo or with the full family band, Nero and Russell have emerged as two of the most compelling new voices in North American Roots music. Nero’s fractured country-soul voice wrapped in Russell’s silver and gold tones, is a fine thing. Not too perfect, not at all saccharine, you’ll hear echoes of mountain gospel, street corner doo-wop, and classic soul. Accompanied by just a banjo and a guitar, it’s haunting. Fired by the band, it’s a full tilt revival. Music this raw and soul-rich demands to be experienced live, and Birds of Chicago have developed a fervent following, touring 200 nights a year since their formation in late 2012.  For these Birds, singing for a room full of new people, hearts wide open, keeps off the cold and chases off the shadows.

Birds of Chicago will be playing at the Doug Fir Lounge, 830 E Burnside, on Sunday, March 12. Tickets for this 21 & over show are available in advance through Ticketfly.com ranging from $15.00 to $18.00. Show time is 9:00 pm.
