Karen Lovely 10 miles of bad roadKaren Lovely celebrates the release of her long-awaited new CD, Ten Miles Of Bad Road, with a special release party at Jimmy Mak’s, 221 NW 10th, on Saturday, September 26. Karen spent the past couple years piecing this recording together with many of the same group of friends who helped create her Blues Music Award nominated album Still The Rain, including ace producer Tony Braunagel and the late songwriter Alan Mirikitani. Recorded at California’s Ultrtone Studios, guests on the album features a session band of a dream-like cast of musicians such as guitarist Johnny Lee Schell, James “Hutch” Huthinson on bass, keyboard master Jimmy Pugh, and Tony Braunagel on drums.

Karen Lovely is known for her passionate, driven performances. A powerhouse vocalist, she delivers a blistering mix of contemporary and old-school blues. For her performance at Jimmy Mak’s, she will be backed by an all-star band with Peter Dammann on guitar, Dave Fleschner on keys, and The Thunder Brothers providing the rhythm section (Justin Matz on drums and Timmer Blakely on bass). Other musicians scheduled to appear will include guests Vyasa Dodson, Mitch Kashmar, Joe McCarthy, and Devin Phillips.

Tickets for the Ten Miles Of Bad Road CD Release Party are available through TicketTomato.com for $15.00 reserved seating (must purchase dinner with reservations), $13.00 general admission. This is a Cascade Blues Association co-sponsored event and members may receive a $3.00 discount on all tickets when ordering online before September 23. You must use the code “CBA” in order to receive the discount. Show time is 8:00 pm. Buy your tickets early as this will certainly sell-out!

Sista Otis, originally from Detroit and now hailing from New Orleans, has been described as a “good god almighty” force of nature whose voice is so full of soul-shine it’ll make you throw up your hands and shout! She started out as a kid cutting her teeth as a Sista Otis - press photo traveling street musician performing her songs for pocket change. Nowadays she performs across the country, and has had her music played on radio stations in twelve different countries. Otis’ music has appeared in films and animation, and she has opened for acts such as Blues Traveler, Zac Brown Band, Fishbone, R.E.M., and Kings Of Leon. The Detroit News claims: “She has enough power to fuel a fire and enough soul to make James Brown proud.”

Needless to say, Sista Otis is a dynamic performer who will capture your attention onstage or with her latest disc, Charmed. She will be touring extensively throughout the Northwest in September and has numerous dates in Oregon, beginning with a September 6 performance at the Volcanic Theater Pub in Bend, followed by four nights, September 7 – 10, in Ashland, an early 6:00 pm all ages show at Biddy McGraw’s (6000 NE Glisan) in Portland on the 11, and a 10:00 pm show that same night in Hood River at The Trillium Café. Finally, Sista Otis will close her Oregon dates on Saturday, September 12 with a full night’s performance at Duff’s Garage (2530 NE 82nd) in Portland for $10.00, co-sponsored by the Cascade Blues Association (bring your membership cards for a $1.00 discount).

Folks have said that Otis is made of what music legends come from and to be sure to catch her show because it’ll change your life! Well here are several chances to see what people are talking about!

What’s better than a nice drive into the country on an early September evening? Why, heading out to The Birk to catch a stupendous live performance by the one and only Sugaray Rayford, of course. And what can be better than that? Two straight nights of Sugaray at his only stop in Oregon on this tour.

Sugaray Rayford - photo by Greg JohnsonTexas born Sugaray began his musical career before the age of seven singing and playing drums in church, and this gospel influence can be heard and felt in his music. Rayford’s phrasing is intimate and conversational, with a powerful, sexy, and soulful voice. He has become a regular nominee in the BluesMusic Awards the past few years for his role with The Mannish Boys, and more recently under his own name. This past May he was nominated for two of the highest honors awarded, Traditional Male Artist of the Year and the BB King Entertainer of the Year. He is currently touring to promote his latest release, Southside.

The Sugaray Rayford Blues Band returns to The Birk, 11139 Hwy 202, Birkenfeld, for two exclusive nights on Thursday, September 10 and Friday, September 11. Both nights begin at 7:00 pm. General admission is $25.00 advance through TicketTomato.com, or $30.00 at the door.

Jackie Greene is a multitalented artist with an uncanny knack for synthesizing his deep affinity for American roots styles into timeless, personally-charged music. Armed with a persuasive voice, vivid songwriting skills, and an instinctive mastery of several instruments, Jackie Greene - photo by Greg VorobiovGreene has been a mainstay on the festival circuit since first breaking out during his teens. In his early years he could be found opening for major tours with artists like BB King, Buddy Guy, Susan Tedeschi, and Taj Mahal. More recently, Greene’s been performing in super groups Trigger Happy (with Joan Osborne and Steve Gorman), and WRG (with Bob Weir and Chris Robinson).

Currently on tour to support his first album in five years, Back To Birth, Jackie Greene will be playing in Portland’s Wonder Ballroom, 128 NE Russell Street, for a 9:00 pm show on Thursday, September 10. This is a 21 & over only event, with tickets on sale through TicketFly.com for $20.00. Opening for Greene will be California-based artist Lauren Shera.

Grammy nominated New Orleans-based singer/songwriter Andrew Duhon is a teller of stories with an undeniably weighted and soulful voice. Duhon has three recordings under his belt and has toured solo Andrew Duhon - press photofor much of his career. A troubadour element is certainly present in his performances; he’s truly a guide to modern day folklore. His latest group, The Andrew Duhon Trio (with upright bassist Myles Weeks and drummer Maxwell Zemanovic) has been crossing the American landscape, touring and creating together while supporting their latest project, The Moorings.

The Andrew Duhon Trio will be appearing in Portland for a pair of shows over the long Labor Day weekend. On Sunday, September 6, they will be at the Doug Fir Lounge, 830 E. Burnside, for a free 3:00 pm performance on the patio as part of the Pickin’ on Sundays series. These shows fill up quickly, so plan on arriving early to get into the patio. 21 & over only.

But if you miss out on the outdoor show on Sunday, the perfect setting for this type of performance is at the intimate Lake Theater and Café in Lake Oswego, 106 N. State Street. This Labor Day, Monday, September 7, show starts at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $12.00 and can be ordered in advance by visiting laketheatercafe.com.

Eric Burdon - press photoIt is no secret that the blues heavily influenced bands involved with the original, 1960’s British Invasion. And one of the biggest acts of the time was Eric Burdon & The Animals. Tim Too Slim Langford - photo by Dean DavisNorthwest favorites Too Slim & The Taildraggers are still on their extended tour of the Northwest and will be heading back to Portland for another performance at Duff’s Garage, 2530 NE 82nd, on Thursday, September 10. This powerhouse trio, led by the fiery guitar of Tim “Too Slim” Langford are members of the Hall of Fame of three Northwest Blues Societies (including the Cascade Blues Association) and have received various awards and nominations from around the country, including prestigious events like the Blues Music Awards and the Blues Blast Awards. The band recently released a two-disc album, Anthology, highlighting many of the best tracks from their Underworld Records catalog plus a handful of newer tunes. Tim has recently battled cancer, so it is a great privilege for us all to catch him back out on the stages once again.

This show at Duff’s Garage begins at 9:00 pm. Admission is $15.00. This is a Cascade Blues Association co-sponsored event, so have your current membership card handy at the door to receive a $1.00 discount off from admission. Since they always put on an amazing performance, Too Slim & The Taildraggers usually sell out, so plan on arriving early to guarantee your entry to the show.

DK Stewart - photo by Greg JohnsonThe DK Stewart Sextet’s CD For The Troops is an unplanned, live recording of the band performing at a fundraiser honoring returning soldiers and their families from Joint Base Lewis McChord’s Special Unit Troops. The afternoon included an air demonstration of vintage prop-driven and restored WWII airplanes in combination with antique auto and military equipment in Olympia, Washington. The resulting recording, newly repackaged and minted, features the DK Stewart Sextet exactly as it sounds on stage and will be distributed through military channels throughout the U.S. and various offshore military bases or facilities for the benefit and enjoyment of deployed personnel. Proceeds from this music will go to benefit the Madigan Foundation, USO, Families of Active Duty Personnel and various other charity foundations that aid the brave men and women who protect and defend our country.

To celebrate the For The Troops recording, The Trails End Saloon (1320 Main Street, Oregon City) will host a release party on Friday, September 11 at 8:00 pm.
