In My Soul
Provogue

Robert Cray CD cover40 years of the Robert Cray Band is highlighted by this landmark disc In My Soul. Cray and bassist Richard Cousins originated the band back in 1974 and throughout those ensuing years there has been one stellar release after another filling up their resume. The band most recently struck paydirt with their 2012 album Nothin’ But Love; a disc that hit strongly amongst the best material that Cray has ever laid down to tracks. It left some very big shoes to fill replicating the success and power of that release, but In My Soul easily matches that and just may surpass it, too. It comes home to Cray’s roots and love for the sound of soulful R&B with eight original numbers set up alongside a trio of outstanding covers initially made famous by Otis Redding, Bobby Bland and Lou Rawls.

Alongside Cousins, Cray is also joined by new band member Les Falconer on drums who also sings on “Nobody’s Fault But Mine,” which having another vocalist taking the lead in itself is a first for any Cray recording. And returning to the band after a lengthy absence since the 1980s is keyboardist Dover Weinberg. His playing really excels on numbers such as “Deep In My Soul,” “Fine Yesterday,” the tender “Hold On,” and his Booker T styled organ on the instrumental “Hip Tight Onions.” Also in the mix are the driving horns of Trevor Lawrence and Steve Madalo on a handful of songs, and Steve Jordan offering percussion, drums and even guitar on a trio of tracks as well as handling the producing chair for the whole outing.

Cray is right on top of his game with his guitar work, as expected. But what is the true star of In My Soul is the deep down, feel it to your bones soulful vocals that excel throughout the album. He is at his absolute best on pieces like “Your Good Thing Is About To End” and “Hold On.” There is a lot of heart behind In My Soul and if 40 years of making music has done anything for Robert Cray it has proven that there are still a lot of oats to sow and though he has had a fair amount of success over the years, he just may still have his best work ahead of him still. In My Soul is certainly paving the path in that direction.

Restless Mind
Shake It Sugar Records

Murali Coryell returns with yet another outstanding release with Restless Mind. His growth as an artist continues to impress me with his soulful voice, strong guitar work and excellent songwriting skills. The son of jazz guitarist Larry Coryell and occasionally second guitarist for Joe Louis Walker’s touring band, Coryell follows his own path in his musical focus and his songs are fine examples of blues with a slight rock edge that are well crafted and memorable. This is Coryell’s ninth release and is right on track with his previous studio recording, the acclaimed Sugar Lips, which prove he is an artist to be reckoned with.

Murali Coryell CD coverAll the songs are originals with the exception of his tasty reading of Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On” that closes the disc. Alongside Coryell’s tuneful guitar are Ernie Durawa on drums and Chris Alcaraz on bass providing the rhythm section of his regular band and accompanied on two numbers with the horns of Joe Morales and Jimmy Shortell.

His songwriting abilities strike on all accounts throughout the album, with special note to numbers like the R&B feel of “Kiss Me First,” “Crime Of Opportunity” focusing on his soulful singing and a killer guitar solo, “I Can’t Give You Up” with punchy horn lines, the title track “Restless Mind” and perhaps the best song on the disc “Everyday Is A Struggle” with its funky flavor and searing string work.

It seems a little funny to talk about the growth of artist whose first release came out nearly twenty years ago, but sometimes that is the way things work out in music, especially the blues. Murali Coryell is certainly a talent that should be recognized and with his last few recordings this is an artist surely coming into the strength of his career’s output. Restless Mind is an impressive release filled with another spectacular performance of Coryell’s diverse approach to the blues done in his own way and when it comes to modern blues that is a mighty fine direction indeed.

Gold Mine
Self Produced

Stevens Hess Band CD coverVicki Stevens and Sonny Hess are a natural combination that really rings true with their first full-length CD, Gold Mine. The album contains seven original tracks penned by Sonny and Vicki, with two covers, and is a sensational follow-up to their earlier EP, Blues Alchemy. Both Sonny and Vicki are award-winning artists in their own right individually, as well as receiving the CBA’s Best New Act Muddy Award this past year for putting this outstanding outfit together. And though Sonny has worked with many of the Northwest’s finest vocalists, Vicki Stevens is by far the best match for her since the tragic loss of Paulette Davis in 1996. They go together just like the Louis Jordan song “Beans and Cornbread,” like strawberries and shortcake, like corn beef and cabbage, like red beans and rice . . . well, you get the picture. The disc opens with a song written by Sonny and the late Paulette Davis, titled “Bad Intentions.” Starting out with a deep bass line from Jim Hively and sultry saxophone from guest Fenix that leads into Vicki’s smooth vocals and Sonny offering a little biting guitar break midway through. It is the perfect song to lead off this fine disc. That’s followed by the title track, “Gold Mine,” where Vicki blows some mighty chunky harmonica while growling the vocals. On “Kiss And A hug,” Sonny brings out the guitar licks that’ll draw you right in. This song is one of two non-originals from the band and was written by Greg Carter. The other cover track is the Burt Bacharach classic, “Baby It’s You,” a completely unexpected number toward the end of the disc that is going to put a smile on your face. “Someone Like You” is a slow blues number again with Sonny shining brightly on guitar. “Saved” has a nice funky pace with more exceptional performances from everyone. Hively’s bass and Kelly Pierce really run the attack on this one, with yet more burning harp solos from Vicki. The song mixture takes on a variety of angles that are fun and often revealing of their own personal experiences, both ups and downs. Gold Mine is an enjoyable outing for a duet that just seems made to work with one another and hopefully it’s a partnership that will continue to release many more as time moves forward. Your first round Muddy Award ballots for nominating your favorite acts, performers, performances, and venues should have arrived at every members’ home by the time you read this. Remember, this is your opportunity to decide who ends up on the final ballot. If you do not nominate, do not complain about who is on that final ballot. This is a majority result of all the ballots received to select the top three vote getters. If there is a tie in any category that results in more than three, we will include all. The Board of Directors does not make the call, it is totally up to our members.

A few notes to help you determine who you may want to select and to avoid some confusion.

In the category Contemporary Blues, this refers to modern electric blues or blues rock.

Traditional Blues means acoustic or those artists playing in the classic electric style that harkens back to the early years in Chicago, Detroit, St Louis, etc from the 1940s-early 1960s.

Regional Blues Act are those that reside in the Pacific Northwest: Oregon, Washington or Idaho. This does not include artists living within the Portland Metro area.

Northwest Recording are also for those acts within Oregon, Washington and Idaho.

National Recording are for those releases from artists across the country or internationally. Northwest recordings may be included in the National selections, too.

There is a list on the back of the ballot of all the past Lifetime Achievement recipients. You only live once, so those on this list are not eligible to be nominated again.

As we did last year, we have compiled a list of performances and Northwest releases and posted them on the CBA website, under the heading Cascade Blues Notes use the drop down menu to Muddy Awards. These lists are by no means inclusive of all, so let us know if you see something missing and we will enter those (do not send in a list of all gigs local musicians played, there is no way we could possibly list them all). Performances are meant for individual acts. Events are for special shows including multiple artists or festivals and have been separated on the list.

A few awards have been named after certain artists meaning that they are retired from those categories and not eligible to be nominated. This includes Curtis Salgado for Male Vocalist, Duffy Bishop for Female Vocalist and Terry Robb for Acoustic Guitar. The Lifetime Achievement award is named in honor of Paul deLay by a decision of the Board of Directors. In order for a category to be named after an artist, they must have received the award in that respective category no less than twelve times. The Waterfront Blues Festival has been retired from the Northwest Blues Event category on their request, in order for other events to merit the same recognition.

You do not have to select three choices in each category, but do not write in more than three or all will be voided.

Ballots must be returned either by bringing them to the next CBA membership meeting on September 3rd or by mail to 2014 Muddy Awards, c/o Cascade Blues Association, PO Box 14493, Portland, Oregon 97293, postmarked no later than September 12th in order for us to be able to compile the results for the final ballot. Any ballot received postmarked after that date will not be counted.

Keep the date Wednesday, November 5th open for the 2014 Muddy Awards at The Melody Ballroom, starting at 6:30 pm. We will have performances from our Journey to Memphis winners The Rae Gordon Band and David Pinsky & Phil Newton, and a Muddy All Star Band put together this year by Dave Fleschner.

Here is a list of performances and events that occured between September 2013 and August 2014 that you can use for considering nominations for the Muddy Awards for Performance of the Year and Northwest Event of the Year. This is not necessarily all-inclusive, so let us know if you see something missing.

We do list every local musicians’ performances as that would amount to quite a bit of space, and how would we determine one show over another. Overall performances by an act should be considered under the various catagories for individual achievement such as Contemporary Blues Act, R&B Act, Traditional Blues Act, or one of the instrumentation choices.

We have separated the shows as Performance and Event in the listings, and put them in order of the time of the year they occured as many happened early in the year and may not be on mind at this time. Performance means an individual act’s show, Event means multiple artists are involved.

The performances from festivals like the Waterfront Blues Festival have not been included, as again, there are just too many to list individually. But they are eligible for nominations.

Remember: The Waterfront Blues Festival has requested to no longer be nominated for the Northwest Blues Event catagory. They wish to allow other events the opportunity to receive this award after winning every year since the Muddy Awards began.

Topcat Records 20th Anniversary CD coverVarious Artists

Topcat Records

Topcat Records celebrates their twentieth anniversary by releasing this wonderful two-disc set that focuses on musicians from Texas as well as presenting some of the legendary artists of the genre who have had material released under the label’s name. It is filled with roadhouse blues, traditional and classic live recordings that document just how vital the music under their brand has been.

Texas musicians take the front seat in this collection, many you may know or are just hearing about here. They are all worthy of inclusion. Important pieces of the scene within Topcat’s Dallas home base and beyond. Jimmy Vaughan, Johnny Nicholas, Bugs Henderson, Hashbrown, Holland K. Smith, Jim Suhler, Mike Morgan, Tutu Jones, Kenny Traylor, UP Wilson are amongst those Lone Star State artists featured. And then there are the masters you’ll recognize from other parts such as Muddy Waters, Big Mama Thornton, George “Harmonica” Smith, former BB King trumpeter Calvin Owens, early blues great Jesse Thomas who recorded well into the 1990s, or Hollywood Fats with The Paladins. Many are no longer with us, but the music they made for Topcat lives on.

This is an exceptional collection from a label that continues to record and release valuable blues that should be heard, showcasing not only a vital and strong blues scene within Texas, but sharing the artists that keep the blues going on in the right path.
